As featured in the a recent article by the Evening Standard.
A progesterone test is typically done 7 days before your next expected period, which is around day 21 of a 28-day cycle. This is because progesterone levels peak during the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle, which occurs after ovulation.
This test can give you an insight into your hormonal health. Simply collect a sample of blood at home using a finger prick and send it to our lab for analysis, or you can choose a partner clinic or pharmacy to get your blood drawn. The kit contains everything you need to collect blood. Inside, you'll find lancets, instructions, lab request form, labels, tube, tube pouch, prepaid UN3373 envelope, tube holder, swabs, alcohol wipes and plasters. In extremely hot or cold weather, your sample may be at risk of damage. To help protect it, please drop it off directly at a post office instead of using a postbox.
Female hormones play a crucial role in supporting various bodily functions such as fertility, metabolism, mood regulation, and even sleep patterns. Any alteration in these hormones can manifest through changes in your menstrual cycle, weight fluctuations, skin issues like acne, hair thinning, decreased energy levels, feelings of anxiety or depression, or even muscle weakness. There are also associations between hormonal levels and menopause.
Our convenient at-home test is designed to help you pinpoint whether a hormone imbalance could be the underlying cause of your symptoms.
It's worth noting that the contraceptive pill may impact your test results. If you decide to discontinue its use, we recommend waiting until your menstrual cycles return to their regular pattern before taking the test. Additionally, if you're not planning to conceive, ensure you use an alternative form of contraception during this period.
Here's a brief explanation of each of the parameters tested:
1. Progesterone is a hormone released by the ovaries that is involved in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embryogenesis. It prepares the endometrium (lining of the uterus) for a potential pregnancy after ovulation and helps maintain pregnancy.
2. Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that plays a key role in the reproductive processes of both males and females. In women, it stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles in the ovary before the release of an egg.
3. Luteinising Hormone (LH) is another hormone produced by the pituitary gland that is crucial for reproduction. In females, a surge in LH triggers ovulation and development of the corpus luteum. In males, LH stimulates the production of testosterone from the Leydig cells in the testes.
4. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that promotes milk production (lactation) in females after childbirth. It also plays a role in regulating the immune system and pancreatic development.
5. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, although it is present in both males and females. It is responsible for the development of male reproductive tissues, secondary sexual characteristics, and it also influences muscle and bone mass, as well as mood and energy levels.
6. Oestradiol is a form of estrogen, a key hormone in the body, primarily involved in regulating the female reproductive system. It plays a critical role in processes such as menstrual cycle regulation, bone health, and maintaining the function of the cardiovascular system. In blood tests, measuring oestradiol levels can help assess ovarian function, diagnose hormonal imbalances, monitor fertility treatments, and evaluate conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or menopause. Abnormal oestradiol levels may indicate underlying health issues, making it an important marker in both diagnostic and monitoring contexts.
