What is a Normal Range for Cholesterol Levels?
Lipid profile test results are often reported in millimoles per litre (mmol/L). Here are the general target ranges for a standard lipid profile:
1. **Total Cholesterol:**
- Desirable: Less than 5.2 mmol/L
2. **Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol:**
- Optimal: Less than 2.6 mmol/L
- Near optimal/above optimal: 2.6 to 3.3 mmol/L
- Borderline high: 3.4 to 4.1 mmol/L
- High: 4.2 mmol/L and above
3. **High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Cholesterol:**
- Low: Less than 1.0 mmol/L
- Higher is considered better. Ideally, you want HDL levels above 1.2 mmol/L.
4. **Triglycerides:**
- Normal: Less than 1.7 mmol/L
- Borderline high: 1.7 to 2.2 mmol/L
- High: 2.3 to 5.6 mmol/L
- Very high: 5.7 mmol/L and above
These values are general guidelines, and optimal ranges can vary based on individual health factors. It's important to interpret lipid profile results in conjunction with other health information and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Additionally, different laboratories may use slightly different reference ranges, so it's advisable to refer to the specific reference ranges provided by the laboratory that conducted the test.
