Folate (Vitamin B9)
Folates are compounds derived from pteroylglutamic acid (PGA) that act as coenzymes in metabolic processes involving the transfer of single-carbon units between molecules. Along with vitamin B12, folate is crucial for DNA synthesis, which is necessary for the proper maturation of red blood cells. Humans obtain folate from dietary sources such as fruits, leafy green vegetables, yeast, and organ meats. It is absorbed in the small intestine and stored in the liver.
Folate deficiency can result from inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption due to gastrointestinal disorders, pregnancy, and certain medications like phenytoin. Chronic alcoholism is also linked to folate deficiency. Both folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies impair DNA synthesis, leading to macrocytic anaemia. This condition is characterized by abnormal red blood cell precursor development in the bone marrow, the presence of megaloblasts, and reduced red blood cell lifespan.
Since macrocytic anaemia can result from either folate or vitamin B12 deficiency, accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate treatment. Serum folate measurement provides an early indication of folate status.
